Job Description:

We offer a range of adventure and eco-tourism experiences in Tropical North Queensland, including White Water Rafting on the Barron River (Grades 1-3) & Tully River (Grades 3-4) and Rainforest Tubing through jungle waterways!


Our River Guides (Rafting and Tubing) are responsible for delivering a high-quality experience to our guests with the primary focus being on the safety and enjoyment of the guests.


What we look for:

River Guides with Commercial White-Water experience.


If you do not possess previous commercial white-water experience, we offer a 6-week River Guide course twice a year. Please apply separately.


River Guide Customer and Service Standards:

  • Demonstrate personal attentiveness whilst building and maintaining a friendly rapport with guests and team members.
  • Adapt customer service style to suit the group/ personalities assigned to the tour/ boat on the day, whilst maintaining a level of fun and professionalism
  • Clearly and effectively communicate with guests, particularly at the beginning of trips to ensure guests understand safety instructions and rafting/ tubing techniques

 

River Guide typical duties and skills may include:

  • The service, hospitality, and entertainment of guests
  • Independently carry out guided raft tours
  • Follow basic work health and safety procedures.
  • Maintain a satisfactory standard of physical appearance.
  • Packing and unpacking equipment for all raft trips
  • Navigating rafts down the river safely and in line with company policies and procedures.
  • Collecting outstanding funds and tickets on tour, as per the manifest
  • Carrying out sales of shoe hire, merchandise, and photos
  • Completing Rafting Logbooks, driver logs and vehicle checklists as required 
  • Carrying out passenger transfers
  • Cleans buses


River Guides carry out guided Rafting and Tubing Tours and must:

  • Value safety as the most important element, immediately reporting hazards to the Trip Leader
  • Treat, store, pack and handle all gear and equipment respectfully and in line with provided training.
  • Report any damages to gear and equipment as they arise to the most appropriate person for the instance/ type of damage/ effect on the business - Trip Leader, Rafting Supervisor & Group Trainer, Inventory Manager or Operations Manager
  • Report any damages to vehicles as they arise to the most appropriate person for the instance / type of damage/ effect on the business - Trip Leader, Rafting Supervisor & Group Trainer, Inventory Manager or Operations Manager

 

Essential Qualifications / Certificates:

  • HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid  
  • HLTAID009 - Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation  
  • HLTAID015 - Provide Advanced Resuscitation and Oxygen Therapy


Desirable

  • QLD LR/MR/ HR License and Drivers Authority
  • Remote First Aid Certificate
  • Swiftwater Rescue Certificate
  • Previous experience in a similar role


Other Requirements:

  • Maintain a suitable level physical fitness to safely carry out tours.
  • Have the ability to regularly lift/ pack equipment in a safe manner independently and part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, public holidays and extended hours during peak periods.
  • Stay up to date with best practice white water rafting safety guidelines and raft techniques.


Your typical day as a river guide could look like this:

River Tubing (7am–12pm) through rainforest waterways, then tackling rapids on an afternoon Barron River Rafting tour (1pm–6pm). Some days, it’s just an AM or PM trip!


What We Offer:

Employment: Permanent Positions + Weekly Pay + Paid Holiday Leave

Pay Rates: start at $29.93 p/hr (as of 1 July 2025) – depending on experience & role

Hours: Typically, 15–38 hours per week, with lots of seasonal variation.


Our operations roll through four peak periods each year.

Our busiest (and most exciting!) times line up with Australian school holidays:

April + June to July + September to October + December to January.


These peak periods mean more guests and more shifts - we will let you know the best time to arrive, so you don’t miss the fun!
